A day after the Sutherland Canyon fire blew through Beezley Hills, the ash-covered earth was still smoldering. Somehow, though, 33 rare pygmy rabbits, burrowed 3 to 4 feet beneath the ashen soil, had managed to survive the conflagration.

Authorities said the body of a 17-year-old male was pulled from Lake Quinsigamond near Lake Park. The teen was reported missing at about 6:50 p.m. Officers were met by the teen's brother and cousin who said he was last seen in the water about 45 minutes before contacting police. They said the teen was outside the designated swimming area near a buoy and not a strong swimmer.

Officials are investigating an officer-involved shooting. Highway Patrol was responding to a single vehicle crash. A trooper saw a woman lying on the interstate armed with a firearm. As the trooper approached her, an armed confrontation began and the woman was injured. She was transported to Wake Medical Center where she died. The trooper has been placed on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.

An American tourist died early Friday after being beaten to death in a bar in Greece. Bakari Henderson, 22, from Austin, Texas, was visiting the island of Zakynthos, Greece, when a bar fight escalated into a brawl. Construction work on the Central Street Bridge in North Smithfield is causing some road closures this weekend. Route 146 South between the Forestdale/Slatersville exit and Exit 1 in Massachusetts was closed from late Friday night into late Saturday morning while steel for the new bridge was placed; Route 146 North will be closed in the same area from Saturday afternoon into Sunday morning.

Now her community is rallying around her and is giving her an amazing gift. As of Friday evening, the GoFundMe page for Waldon had raised nearly $55,000 of the $60,000. The 2-bedroom home is being built on her family’s land by volunteers and with donated funds. Construction on the exterior of the home is complete and some interior framing is done.

A sewer roughly 12 feet underneath the ground still needs to be repaired, likely keeping the road closed into next week. He also said it's the first time this water main, built in 1913, has ever been recorded as breaking. Margevicius added the "root cause" of the incident is still under investigation.
